Thomas C. and Margaret Blackburn Carroll are actually my husband's ancestors. My husband's middle name is Carroll and he really didn't appreciate it while he was growing up and seldom told anyone what it was. But, we are both anxious to get the story of Thomas and Margaret Carroll into print. I am still organizing some information, but I have been able to develop time line for Thomas, Margaret and all of their children.
The greatest difficulty in researching Thomas Carroll is his name. It is so very common. His death certificate says that his father was Thomas Carroll and his mother's name was unknown. County Tipperary where he originated has a multitude of Thomas Carrolls.
It's been impossilble to determine exactly when Thomas arrived and where. An incredible number of Thomas Carrolls migrated to the United States the duration of the Potato Famine. Some had his same birth date and many were also from County Tipperary. If anyone knows some magic to solve this problem I would really appreciate knowing it.
Another problem is that his burial record says he is a veteran of the Civil War. Again, there were many Thomas Carrolls who fought for both sides. I recently got an email that said he had packed his family in a wagon and left Fairfax Station, Virginia because he was so against slavery. By the 1870 census, the family was in Green Township, Hamilton County, Ohio. I'd appreciate any suggestions to find out if he went there directly or if he stopped in another Union state along the way. The 1867 Atlas has him with property in Green Township, but I haven't been able to find out any information from 1860-1867.
I will add all of the information I have about the family with greater detail and sources at a later time. I'm just hoping someone else is from this same family and has new information. I have been researching genealogy of our families for about 15 years now. I've been to Salt Lake City, Fort Wayne, Hamilton County Library in Cincinnati, Fairfax Courthouse in Virginia, and all over the internet looking for the family of Thomas Carroll. Great luck with some, not so much with others.
This is probably enough for a first post. I've started blogs before but never followed through. I am determined to keep this one going.
